The Hermetica is a Greek translation of the teachings of Thoth. The Greeks viewed Thoth as being the same as their own god Hermes and to distinguish the Egyptian god from their own Hermes the Greeks gave Thoth the tittle of Trismegistus (Thrice Great). Egyptian knowledge and spirituality was something the Greeks viewed with awe this can been seen in the writings of Plato as much of his own work in the Timaus dialogues regarding the creation of the universe parallels that of Thoths teachings on the same subject. Thoth was believed to be a great sage whose wisdom eventually venerated him to god status.
In Egyptian mythology Atum is the creator, the supreme god. In his teachings Thoth names the creator as Atum.It was through the power of mind/ thought that Thoth was able to reach Atum and the creator showed Thoth how the universe was created and instructed him to record this knowledge.
Thoth saw Atum as a bright light, a light that was the mind of Atum, a light united with joyous love, a light that was everything but the light cast a shadow which formed the chaotic, restless, waters. The light then uttered a word which calmed the chaotic waters. This calming word was the Son of God and the word fell upon the fertile waters and the four elements came into being and combined to create the living creatures. The element of fire was articulated to form the stars and the gods of the seven heavenly bodies revolving in their endless celestial circles. The word then reunited with the mind of Atum and Atum now instructed Thoth to write down what he had seen and to make himself a spiritual guide for those worthy of the knowledge so that, through Thoth, Atum may save humankind.
Atum is everywhere, Atum is all things yet Atum cannot be seen. Atum can only be seen through thought and it was through thought that Thoth saw the creator and it was through thought that Atom showed Thoth the creation of the universe. The Light that was everything, the chaotic waters that became the cosmos, the creation of the stars and planets and finally all the living creatures.
The collective works of Thoth have become known as the Hermetica and I will be pointing out several key aspects of Thoths teachings which are relevant to our on going work regarding chakras/ and paths of enlightenment.
